After Lin Yan said that, the atmosphere among the three immediately eased. The meal passed with laughter and conversation, without the slightest awkwardness.

Li Ran and Liu Yang drove Lin Yan home first. Biluo Garden was a heavily guarded villa community, and unfamiliar cars were never allowed inside. Thus, Lin Yan got out at the entrance and shrugged. “I won’t invite you in today. Next time, definitely.”

“All right, hurry inside. We’ll get together again when we have the chance.” Li Ran waved at her.

Liu Yang, however, looked at Lin Yan with an enigmatic smile and said something utterly cryptic. “We’ll be seeing each other again very soon.”

Lin Yan froze for a moment, unable to understand why Liu Yang was always so strange. But with Li Ran there, she could hardly say anything.

From inside the car, Li Ran laughed. “Yan Yan is my best friend. We’ll be meeting up all the time, so of course we’ll see each other again soon.”

The car turned around at the entrance to Biluo Garden and slowly drove away. Lin Yan watched its shadow grow smaller before turning to walk inside. Just then, a car passed close by her. She paid it no attention and took two more steps, but out of the corner of her eye, she inadvertently caught sight of the person inside.

The car swept past her in an instant. She could barely make out what kind of car it was, but the figure inside looked strangely familiar. The man behind the wheel was unmistakably the same man who had come to her aid at Anran Residence.

She suddenly remembered that she was still holding one of his suits. Turning around, she stared blankly in the direction the car had gone. It was probably too late to chase after him now.

She had no idea what he was doing at Biluo Garden. Perhaps he had a friend who lived there. Maybe they would meet again someday.

Thinking this, Lin Yan stopped looking after the departing car and leisurely made her way inside.

When she reached the door, Lin Yan entered the password three times, but each time the system announced that it was incorrect. Yet she clearly remembered that she had set the password herself. How could it be wrong?

She had always been simple-minded, and her password was just as simple: the six digits 123321. There was no way she could have remembered it incorrectly, much less entered it incorrectly. One failed attempt was understandable, but surely it could not be wrong every time.

Standing outside the door and watching the sun sink into the west, she suddenly felt a deep sense of loneliness.

She wanted to press the doorbell, but she did not want Ye Ye to answer. She knew that Aunt Zhang had taken leave, and if Leng Mohan was home, he ought to be upstairs at this hour. If Ye Ye found out that she did not even know the password to her own front door, would that not prove that she and Leng Mohan were not truly affectionate? And would that news not reach her mother-in-law’s ears before long?

She considered calling Leng Mohan, but after picking up her phone, she had no idea what to say once he answered. Was she really supposed to tell him that she had forgotten the password to the door?

But she had clearly set the password herself.

She stood outside, struggling with the problem for a long while, unsure what to do.

Suddenly, she heard a soft beep, and the door opened from within. Leng Mohan stood in the doorway wearing only a black T-shirt, his sleeves rolled high, his hair slightly tousled, a faint warmth clinging to him.

Although it was spring, the evenings could still be chilly. That was simply how Huai City was—the difference between day and night was considerable.

Lin Yan stared at Leng Mohan in surprise, standing stiffly in the doorway with the cold air clinging heavily to her.

“Are you not coming in?” Leng Mohan glanced at her.

The corner of Lin Yan’s mouth twitched. She wanted to ask how he had known she was outside, but in the end, she said nothing.

She was just about to go upstairs when Leng Mohan called her back.
