Lin Yan picked up her chopsticks in a daze and took a bite of the side dish; the sour and spicy flavor was quite appetizing.

"Brother Mohan ate a lot just now; he said my cooking is very good." Ye Ye looked at Lin Yan, took another bite of bread, and then placed the remainder on the plate in front of her. She wiped her mouth with a napkin, extended her fair, slender fingers, and continued, "Actually, I rarely cook. I never even cooked for my parents at home. I am a nutritionist, not a chef."

As Lin Yan chewed the side dish, her chopsticks still between her lips, she heard Ye Ye's words. She set the chopsticks down, offered a faint smile, and said, "There is no need to prepare breakfast for me in the future. I don't have the habit of eating breakfast. Of course, you are not a cook for this household, but if Mother Zhang returns, please just tell her that I do not eat breakfast."

Having said that, she stood up and walked upstairs. Ye Ye stared at her back; the face that had just been smiling turned cold in an instant, and her red lips trembled slightly.

Back upstairs, Lin Yan couldn't help but chuckle at herself. Why was she bickering with a young girl? She shook her head, sat down in front of the computer, and opened the manuscript she had yet to finish revising. Perhaps because she was well-rested, inspiration seemed to pour out of her mind. She spent the entire morning typing away, managing to complete most of the ending for her manuscript, "Seven-Year Itch."

Lin Yan wrote novels on a major website. She wasn't incredibly famous, but she wasn't doing poorly either. She had always maintained a good, professional distance with her editor. This particular manuscript was intended for a romance novel competition. Her editor was very invested in the event; for all the authors under his wing who could participate, he personally reviewed their work before it was published.

"Soaring Miles" had always been a very responsible editor, so Lin Yan felt comfortable sending the revised manuscript to his email. She left him a message saying it was nearly finished and asked him to take a look so she could handle the final polish later.

By the time she finished all this, her stomach was already growling. She checked the time and realized, to her surprise, that it was already past two in the afternoon—quarter past two. She rubbed her sore neck just as her phone suddenly rang.

Glancing at the caller ID, she saw it was Li Ran. Without much preamble, Li Ran asked Lin Yan out for a meal, insisting on treating her.

Since she hadn't had lunch anyway, and it was rare for Li Ran to offer to pay, Lin Yan didn't hesitate to agree.

She changed her clothes and walked downstairs. Ye Ye was watching television, and four dishes and a soup sat untouched on the dining table.

Lin Yan was surprised, wondering if Ye Ye had been waiting for her. That seemed a bit too dedicated.

"Sister Lin Yan, did Brother Mohan say if he would be back for lunch today?" Ye Ye asked, skipping over excitedly.

"I don't know," Lin Yan replied, shaking her head with a smile.

In truth, she really didn't know. She was never clear about his whereabouts. However, based on past experience, he generally did not eat lunch at home.

Lin Yan suddenly felt that she had been reading too much into things; it seemed as if she had been waiting for Leng Mohan.

"Ah, how could you not know?" Ye Ye looked at Lin Yan in astonishment. As far as she knew, the Leng family was a very traditional and disciplined household. They had been a prominent family since the end of the Qing Dynasty, and for all these years, they had retained a certain archaic atmosphere—a wife should naturally wait at home when her husband is out, and she should have a meal prepared for him; if the husband hasn't eaten, the wife, of course, shouldn't eat either.
