To achieve the skill of "piercing a willow leaf from a hundred paces" takes twenty years of work. While this may look like the result of simple hard work, those in the know understand that it requires more than just effort; it demands immense talent and perseverance. Without these, one would easily fade into the crowd. Twenty years is not twenty days, two months, or even two years—it is thousands of days and nights of unwavering dedication. It is the very embodiment of persistence.
"This..." Liu Yinchang and his colleagues fell silent. They had never really looked into Su Yunjin, nor did they know that a young woman could possess such legendary archery skills.
"I know you are all very busy with your work and have no time to look into these matters," Zhang Lu explained gently. "However, I have always lived by a principle: opportunities are fleeting and must be seized. While I cannot say I am entirely without responsibility in this, please rest assured that I have not lost my senses. The point I just made is the first, but not the most important, as there are many hardworking athletes in our country. The more critical reason I chose Su Yunjin is her popularity. For archery to gain national attention, it needs a celebrity ambassador who commands the same level of interest. Based on these two points, I have decided to bring her into our association."
After Zhang Lu finished his gentle explanation, he looked at Liu Yinchang and the others and asked softly, "Secretary Liu, colleagues, is there anything else you would like to say?"
Having heard this, Liu Yinchang and his peers understood Zhang Lu’s reasoning. It was not hard to grasp, and those who had just strongly opposed Su Yunjin’s inclusion began to soften their stance. But then, a question arose in everyone's mind.
"Chairman Zhang, what if... what if Su Yunjin refuses to join our association?" Liu Yinchang asked.
Zhang Lu chuckled. "If she doesn't join, we invite her. China is, after all, a society built on relationships. Surely there is someone who can persuade that young lady?"
The earlier comment about "banning" Su Yunjin if she refused was clearly a joke. The Chinese Archery Association didn't have that kind of power. Even if they did, they wouldn't actually ban someone just for declining an invitation.
Liu Yinchang nodded, though his heart grew heavy. He had initially feared Su Yunjin joining, but after Zhang Lu's explanation, he became worried that she might not. In his mind, he was already starting to think about how to foster a connection between Su Yunjin and the association.
This internal meeting of the Chinese Archery Association was unknown to the outside world. However, many eyes were on them—not just netizens, but other associations that stood on equal footing.
The China Writers Association: "The Archery Association hasn't made a move yet. Are they really going to invite Su Yunjin?"
The China Swimming Association: "For years, the Archery Association has been stagnant. The sport itself has been hit-or-miss, and athletes were always brought in from the outside. It's easy to understand why they’d be interested in someone like her."
The China Football Association: "They're all just phoning it in anyway; why are they being so serious?"
The gossip swirled within these small circles. Meanwhile, Su Yunjin was unaware of the online chatter or the discussions among the major associations. Upon returning to the military camp, she did not immediately contact the Archery Association. This was not because she was cold or putting on airs, but because her vacation had ended the moment she returned to base. Following military regulations, she had to hand in her phone. Even though there wasn't much to do, she had to follow the rules.
However, unbeknownst to Su Yunjin, the production team behind "Passionate Soldiers," led by Xu Zhang, was also holding a meeting. The topic was simple: how to structure the upcoming episodes.
"We absolutely cannot continue with the previous format. If we do, this won't be 'Passionate Soldiers' anymore; it will be the Su Yunjin Show," Xu Zhang said. After the previous week's broadcast, he had identified a critical issue. While trying to maintain a semblance of fairness, Su Yunjin's abilities far surpassed everyone else's. As a result, all eyes were on her. Throughout the episode, the other participants—Guan Tongyue, Zhang Chuchu, Zhang Xiaoxiao, and Zheng E—had barely any screen time. Despite everyone following the same schedule, the audience only had eyes for Su Yunjin.
As the director, he was under contract and couldn't let Su Yunjin hog all the glory. After all, the agencies of the other artists expected a return on their investment. Especially for Guan Tongyue, whose involvement was secured partly through personal favors. If he didn't deliver, he would be unable to show his face in the entertainment industry again.
"But can we really change it now?" the executive director asked, looking bewildered, as did the rest of the staff. Creating a new segment on the fly was something they hadn't considered, and doing so now would be extremely difficult.
Yet, Xu Zhang gave them no room to refuse. Gritting his teeth, he said, "We have to, whether we can or not. If we stick to this training format, the show will collapse. Do we really want to be labeled as a show that only serves to promote one person?"
Everyone went silent, looking at one another in the cramped meeting room. It was then that the executive director spoke up: "How about we switch to a wilderness survival mode?"
"Huh?"
"The military includes wilderness survival training, doesn't it? Since Su Yunjin is so strong, why don't we just have her live in the wild?" the executive director proposed. "The five of them could form one or two groups. If they have to survive in the wild for a week, surely Su Yunjin won't be the only one standing out."
The executive director's reasoning was simple: if you can't stop Su Yunjin from stealing the spotlight, make her suffer a little. Of course, this meant Guan Tongyue and the others would have to suffer too.
Xu Zhang looked at the executive director for a few seconds, then his eyes began to light up. "Good! That's a great idea. Get the team to prepare. I refuse to believe she can still steal all the attention this time!"
Excitement surged through Xu Zhang. After a moment of thought, he made a bold decision: "To ensure fairness, we will broadcast this special training live. I've already decided on the theme for the next episode: Wilderness Survival Special Training Live!"
