The vehicle maintained its speed, pressing forward relentlessly.
From Su Yunjin’s vantage point, it felt as though she was walking through water that rose to her neck. Her vision was murky, the car swayed, and the interplay between sight and sensation created a feeling both novel and tinged with fear.
The engine thundered on.
The vehicle continued, pushing ahead. It took more than a minute before the car emerged from the watery obstacle. Smooth terrain lay ahead, but the ordeal was not over. As the speed increased, the military vehicle executed a sharp tailspin, parking neatly in the designated area.
The entire sequence concluded.
The car halted, and the soldier riding with Su Yunjin jumped down, then ran around the front of the vehicle, opening the door for her with gentlemanly grace.
“Thank you.”
Su Yunjin voiced her gratitude and leapt down from the passenger seat.
“You have good nerves.”
“Hm? How so?”
“Most people scream the first time they ride with us. You weren’t scared at all.”
“It’s trust. Surely you wouldn’t let the car flip over.”
She joked with the driver as she walked toward the film crew. She hadn’t gone far when the sound of engines reached her ears. Soon, the military vehicles carrying Guan Tongyue, Zhang Xiaoxiao, and Zheng E arrived.
They too spun their tails and stopped. But unlike Su Yunjin’s vehicle, shrieks erupted from each of the other cars as they parked.
When the vehicles finally settled, the drivers disembarked as well. However, none of them were as courteous as the soldier who opened Su Yunjin’s door; instead, the three drivers all instinctively rubbed their ears. The soldier from Zhang Xiaoxiao’s car even massaged his cheeks, his expression as dark as charcoal.
If not for the cameras trained on him, that driver might have cursed outright.
Su Yunjin’s driver, seeing his comrade’s mood, patted his shoulder in sympathy.
Su Yunjin waited nearby for Guan Tongyue and the others.
However, the four of them did not get out immediately; staff members came forward to open the doors and help them out.
As soon as she stepped down, Zhang Xiaoxiao sat right on the ground. “Oh my god, that was terrifying. I’m never riding in that again, never!”
Her shrill, melodramatic voice made her driver’s face darken even further.
At that moment, Zhang Chuchu and Guan Tongyue were also helped out. Zheng E hurried over to Guan Tongyue’s side, but from the distance, Su Yunjin could not hear their conversation.
But she could see that, thanks to Zheng E’s concern, Guan Tongyue soon recovered her spirits.
Zhang Chuchu continued to complain about the ordeal, and Zheng E offered her brief comfort.
As for Zhang Xiaoxiao, the most dramatic of all, no one paid attention to him until his outburst had run its course; only then did the staff go over to comfort him.
“How do you feel?” asked the outdoor host.
The question was hardly necessary; their reactions made it clear enough.
“It was amazing. My heart was racing just sitting in the passenger seat,” said Guan Tongyue, clutching her chest.
Zhang Chuchu, eyes brimming with tears, said, “It was honestly terrifying. I feel like I’ll have nightmares tonight.”
“No, no, absolutely not. That was too frightening,” Zhang Xiaoxiao stammered, his voice trembling.
Zheng E gave the military driver a thumbs up. “That was truly impressive.”
“I think I could give it a try,” Su Yunjin said when it was her turn to speak, voicing her thoughts openly.
After more than twenty years living in Zongshan, Su Yunjin had developed a keen curiosity about the outside world. Learning was part of that.
This variety show had brought her to the military camp, and she wasn’t about to waste the opportunity. She didn’t know if such a chance would come again, but right now, she was eager to test how much she’d just learned.
“Pfft! Yunjin, you want to try?” Guan Tongyue, still shaken, shrieked in surprise at Su Yunjin’s words.
“Isn’t that really difficult?” Zheng E looked at her as if she were some kind of oddity.
He dared not say much, but as a man, he felt confident in his driving skills compared to a woman’s. Whether Su Yunjin had a license was one thing, but… such a difficult task, and she wanted to try?
Zhang Chuchu and Zhang Xiaoxiao stared at her as if they’d seen a ghost, mouths agape.
The scene was electric.
In the livestream chat, the reaction was the same.
The moment Su Yunjin spoke, the audience exploded.
“What the—did Su Yunjin just say she wants to try?”
“Is she crazy? You can’t just try something like that!”
“I bet she’d flip the car just going over those obstacles.”
“Yeah, at that speed? I’m losing my mind—Su Yunjin is unbelievably bold!”
The viewers were in an uproar.
Earlier, some eagle-eyed fans had noticed Su Yunjin watching the driver’s movements, but no one expected she would actually want to try it herself.
Terrifying!
Absolutely terrifying!
No one had seen such courage before!
The chat blew up, Guan Tongyue, Zheng E, Zhang Xiaoxiao, Zhang Chuchu all were stunned, and backstage, Xu Zhang drew a sharp breath.
He had watched closely; among all five vehicles, Su Yunjin had been the calmest.
He admired her composure, but never imagined she would not only remain calm but also make a request.
To try?
Was she insane?
He didn’t even have the authority for that!
His mind spun, chills crawled down his spine, and just as he picked up the radio to give instructions to the host, he heard Fu Lin speak up, “Sure, let her try. Captain Ma, is that alright?”
Captain Ma was the commander of the vehicle unit.
He had been standing aside, not planning to say much, but since Fu Lin had spoken, he wasn’t about to be stingy.
The camera shifted to Captain Ma, a man of about thirty. He smiled, “Of course. But someone needs to accompany her. Any volunteers?”
“No need for anyone else, I’ll do it myself. I’ve spent time with the vehicle unit—I’ll go along and let Sergeant Zhao take a break.”
Before the other sergeants could speak, Fu Lin volunteered.
Captain Ma said nothing, but Su Yunjin hesitated, “Are you sure, Sergeant? Maybe we should ask Sergeant Zhao?”
Though she had observed, this was her first time operating; who could guarantee she wouldn’t need guidance?
If it were the driver Sergeant Zhao, she’d feel more confident. But Fu Lin—had he even learned this?
“Sergeant Fu is better than me. He’s a top student. Driving? He can pilot a bomber if he wants.”
Fu Lin didn’t reply, but Sergeant Zhao, whom Su Yunjin trusted, spoke up. While explaining to her, admiration shone in his eyes, as if he were gazing at a deity.
