The "Reward" Mechanism of the 007 System

Around four o’clock in the afternoon.

Beneath a sprawling tree, Yugi sat resting after another duel. As he caught his breath, he glanced at his phone, checking the “rewards” issued by the system.

“As expected! Such generous rewards only appear for duelists with fame from the original series. Those who were never depicted in the original anime, or who exist solely in this world—even if you defeat them, you get rewards, but they’re nothing compared to the duel I had with Ryota at noon...”

After reviewing the first batch of rewards granted by the system for defeating Ryota, Yugi had embarked on his journey to collect stars on this island.

Around one o’clock, he found a dueling platform in a wild, open field, facing an opponent with a nondescript face.

After a brief introduction, they discovered that each held three star chips. It was quickly agreed that they would wager two star chips apiece for their second duel on the platform.

Although this male duelist possessed the same number of star chips as Yugi and had only fought one duel on the island, his deck’s strength and dueling skills paled in comparison to Yugi—a visitor from another world, tempered by countless eras of Yu-Gi-Oh anime and games.

In this duel, Yugi didn’t even need to play a single fusion monster; even the Water Bubble Hero he’d just acquired had yet to be summoned. Simply relying on the Four Heroes and their exclusive spells and traps, he defeated the nondescript duelist.

Upon victory, Yugi took the two star chips as his prize and, leaving the platform, felt his phone vibrate in his pocket.

He unlocked his phone, and immediately the system’s reward notification sounded in his ear.

With slight excitement, Yugi opened the app, but the next moment, the messages popping up on the screen instantly cooled his anticipation—

System: [(Duelist Kingdom) Star Collection Task: Defeat a nondescript duelist and acquire star chips (completed). Task reward: Coins *200, Earth Gem *2.]

Yugi: ???

Ah, well...

Staring at the reward, Yugi felt utterly bewildered.

Refusing to accept this outcome, he searched again and, luckily, found another duelist with three star chips.

Since the opponent had only three and Yugi didn’t want to be ruthless, he proposed another duel for two star chips.

This second duel lasted about as long as the previous, and the cards played were much the same.

After the duel, taking the star chips and moving on, Yugi received his third reward notification from the system that day.

He checked his phone, and, as expected, the reward was nearly identical to the last!

The same 100 coins, the same attribute gem—except last time it was “Earth,” this time it was “Fire.”

[Personal Information]
Host: Yugi
Appearance: 96
Luck: 96
Deck: Elemental Hero Standard Edition
Inventory: Gems *100, Coins *1400, R Gems *10, Earth Gems *2, Water Gems *10, Fire Gems *2

“In summary: nameless duelists have no rights.”

Looking at his personal information panel, Yugi sighed.

Yet, through these three duels, Yugi gleaned several insights:

Gems used to open card packs could only be obtained from famous characters or by completing exclusive system tasks;

“R Gems” for exchanging cards at the Card Trader, as well as direct exchange vouchers, were also tied to either famous characters or system tasks;

The remaining “coins,” and the six attribute gems—Light, Dark, Earth, Wind, Water, Fire—could be earned by defeating any normal duelist; the exact quantities likely depended on the opponent’s popularity and strength...

As for the attribute gems, Yugi surmised their acquisition was related to the monster cards and their primary attributes in the opponent’s deck, as well as the environment of the dueling platform on the island.

Just as Yugi sat beneath the tree reflecting on the system’s rewards, footsteps approached from the distance.

Quickly locking his screen and slipping the phone into his breast pocket, Yugi tidied his appearance and stood, looking toward the sound.

“You... Are you Rex Raptor—the runner-up of the first National Duel Monster Tournament and the owner of the rare dragon ‘Evil Knight Dragon’?”

“Hm?”

Hearing himself called, especially with such praise, Rex Raptor stopped, turned toward the voice, and nodded with pride:

“That’s right! I am who you said—the runner-up of the first National Duel Monster Tournament, and the owner of the rare dragon ‘Evil Knight Dragon’—Rex Raptor!”

As he spoke, Rex Raptor saw the man who had called him—a figure nearly twenty centimeters taller, remarkably handsome.

Tsk!

“Hello, I’m Yugi. I stopped you because I want to challenge you to a ‘star chip duel’!”

Seeing Rex Raptor truly pause, Yugi introduced himself simply and got straight to the point, issuing his challenge.

“Oh?” Rex Raptor uttered in surprise, his gaze falling on Yugi’s right hand, where a dueling glove adorned with star chips gleamed.

“Hah~ Seven star chips—the same number as mine.”

(Two his own, one from Ryota, and four from two nondescript duelists)

Rex Raptor showed his own glove, just three holes away from access to the Kingdom’s castle.

“By the way, among my seven stars, one comes from the third-place winner of the tournament, Ryota Kajiki. And that star was won here on the island—my first duel, the first star apart from my initial two.”

Rex Raptor: !

Yugi’s added explanation surprised Rex Raptor—the first duel on the island had been against Ryota, who was slightly weaker, and Yugi had won the star!

If Yugi wasn’t lying, then...

“Interesting.”

Rex Raptor’s lips curled upward. He turned, heading back in the direction he’d come, and beckoned Yugi to follow.

“Come with me. Your challenge—I accept!”

YA☆DA★ZE!

With Rex Raptor accepting his challenge, Yugi could finally clarify the system’s reward mechanism: whether the generous rewards for defeating Ryota truly only appeared for those with fame and popularity.
