You Yi: Wow~ A colorful dream, so magical! (✪ω✪)
System: [(Duel Kingdom) Side quest: Defeat the main character of “Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters,” Seto Kaiba (Completed). Quest rewards: Elemental HERO Blazeman*1, Skyscraper*1, Elemental HERO Grandmerge*1, Gems*300, Gold*5000, SR Jewel*5, Light Jewel*20.]
“Hiss! It’s actually the classic combo of Blazeman and Skyscraper!”
At the sight of these two cards, Yuyi’s eyes lit up. One was “Elemental HERO Blazeman,” a card that could search for a Field Spell and boasted a formidable 2100 attack points at Level 4; the other, “Skyscraper,” was the signature Field Spell of Judai Yuki, the protagonist in the early episodes of “Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.” These rewards were pretty good!
In a duel, if you have Blazeman in hand but not Skyscraper, you can use Blazeman’s effect to send itself to the graveyard and fetch Skyscraper from your deck. After activating Skyscraper, you could then use a revival spell like “Monster Reborn” or a warrior-retrieving card like “The Warrior Returning Alive” to bring Blazeman back to the field.
This would recreate a classic scene akin to “Flame Wingman + Skyscraper!” After all, Flame Wingman had 2100 attack points, just like Blazeman.
Of course, the resemblance between the two combos was mostly just in their attack phase. Flame Wingman, when destroying an enemy monster with less than 3000 attack, could deal damage to the opponent equal to the destroyed monster’s original attack—a single battle phase could severely wound or even one-shot an enemy!
Blazeman, on the other hand, was only good for searching out “Skyscraper.” Without Skyscraper, he couldn’t even stand on the battlefield!
After reviewing the “Blazeman and Skyscraper” combo, Yuyi’s gaze turned to the rest of the rewards. At first glance, his breath caught, followed by a loud gasp.
This… this… the system is actually being this generous!?
Seeing “Elemental HERO Grandmerge” written in bold, Yuyi’s eyes widened like juicy longans. Grandmerge, as a Fusion Monster card, was rated the highest “UR” in the system’s “Card Library!”
The full name of the library was “DL Dueling System.” All cards were divided into four tiers—“N-level Gray” cards, “R-level Blue” cards, “SR-level Gold” cards, and “UR-level Rainbow” cards!
The top-tier “UR Rainbow” cards were either iconic monsters like Dark Magician or Blue-Eyes White Dragon, beloved in the original series and core to their archetypes, or cards like Barrel Dragon and Elemental HERO Stratos, whose standalone effects or importance to their archetypes made them outstanding…
Now, the system was awarding “Elemental HERO Grandmerge,” a “UR Rainbow” card with a powerful effect!
Although Grandmerge was only average in the real OCG, in the mobile game “DL” its effect was rather strong, which was why it was classified as UR.
Right now, for Yuyi’s gradually strengthened Elemental HERO deck—enhanced over the course of a day with cards from the system—this card was more valuable than any other!
Why?
First, Grandmerge’s Fusion materials were extremely simple: two normal monsters with “HERO” in their names.
That was easy to achieve with Yuyi’s current deck—the Elemental HERO Fantastic Four!
With Grandmerge, the “Fantastic Four,” totaling eight cards in Yuyi’s deck, no longer had to wait for specific materials to be drawn—they could fuse in pairs, even if they shared the same name!
This greatly increased the usage of the Fantastic Four, so they wouldn’t just end up as wall monsters (mainly referring to Burstinatrix and Avian, whose stats were too low to compare with the other two, whether in attack or defense), or have to wait for another material to be drawn to fuse.
Next was Grandmerge’s effect, which had two components:
The first effect: Grandmerge had 0 attack and 0 defense, but after being Fusion Summoned with materials, it could unleash its true strength as a Fusion Monster!
Its attack and defense would both increase by the combined Levels of its two “HERO” normal monster materials × 300. In Yuyi’s current deck, that meant Grandmerge’s maximum attack and defense would be (4 stars + 4 stars) × 300 = 2400.
Not a huge number, but very practical for both offense and defense.
Now for the second effect, which was the real value of Grandmerge!
When Grandmerge destroys a monster by battle, it can release itself and then Special Summon any “Elemental HERO” Fusion Monster from the Extra Deck, ignoring its usual Summoning conditions!
As long as the Fusion Monster has “Elemental HERO” in its name, Grandmerge’s second effect could summon it to the field! ✧(≖◡≖✿
Of course, there was a “restriction” on Fusion Monsters Special Summoned this way—
Fusion Monsters Special Summoned by Grandmerge’s second effect can’t attack monsters of a lower Level than themselves!
In other words, the summoned Fusion Monster could either attack directly, or attack monsters at least one Level higher than itself.
However, there was a loophole here: if the opponent had a face-down monster on the field, regardless of whether that monster’s Level was higher, lower, or equal to the summoned Fusion Monster, it could still be attacked!
Because the opponent’s monster was face-down! Without specific circumstances, its Level couldn’t be determined, and so Grandmerge’s restriction didn’t apply.
“Phew!”
Exhaling heavily, Yuyi mentally ran through all the ways Grandmerge would strengthen his deck. His excitement gradually calmed, though his heart was still racing.
“A UR! My first UR-level card!”
With that thought, Yuyi tapped the screen to claim the reward, quickly switched to his “Deck Editor,” and, after a flurry of scrolling, finally found the card in his collection!
“Ah! UR card! Finally—uh…”
Just as he was about to slide Grandmerge into his Extra Deck and tapped on the card image, a message box popped up.
And that message box left Yuyi frozen in place, as if his brain had short-circuited.
[Elemental HERO Grandmerge, trial card x1. Usable until the finals of Duel Kingdom—that is, until Pegasus’ Life Points drop to zero.]
“….”
Wait! What’s going on here? Trial card? With a time limit? And it disappears when Pegasus’ Life Points hit zero?
WDNMD!
“Damn! I was wondering why the system was so generous with a UR—it’s actually a time-limited trial card! Dammit!”
At this, Yuyi could no longer hold back. No longer the model youth he’d been, he unleashed a torrent of curses at his phone screen.
After venting, he calmed down. A trial card was better than nothing.
But, looking at the three card rewards, Yuyi began to understand how the system worked.
The monster Blazeman was an “R-level Blue” card. The Field Spell Skyscraper was an “SR-level Gold” card. The Fusion Monster Grandmerge, a “UR-level Rainbow” card.
The first two were probably the set rewards for defeating Kaiba. The last, Grandmerge, was likely a bonus from the system—perhaps because he had defeated Kaiba’s current strongest monster, “Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon,” using only the system’s starter deck and Duel Kingdom rewards.
If he were to defeat Kaiba during the later Battle City arc, when Kaiba wielded one of the three Egyptian Gods—the Earthshaker, “Obelisk the Tormentor”—would the system grant a real UR card?
The thought made Yuyi drool; the fantasy of such a reward was just too tempting!
“Well, never mind. No point thinking about it now. Time to sleep!”
Shaking the thoughts from his head, Yuyi drifted into dreams. After being woken by Kaiba’s helicopter, watching the duel between Jounouchi and Kaiba, and then dueling himself, he was utterly exhausted!
So then…
Oyasumi! Good night, everyone!
