Chapter Eighty-Seven: Pressing for Marriage
Before nightfall, Hua Feng and his companions finally arrived in the city of Nanjing. As the city lights began to glow, Nanjing, after centuries of history, still warmly embraced everyone and everything within its bounds.
“We’re finally here! We’re home!” Hua Feng exclaimed, sitting on the leather sofa inside the RV, with Yun Meng nestled beside him and Bai Feng quietly reading a book next to Yun Meng.
Hearing Hua Feng’s heartfelt sigh, both Yun Meng and Bai Feng looked up at the window. As the streets became ever brighter, they found themselves on the main road of Nanjing, not far from Hua Feng’s home. Hua Feng had recently heard that his house was now secretly guarded by the military, and his family had returned from the barracks to their home.
As for Yun Meng, her adoptive parents had long since moved out of Nanjing and were now living with their son in Beijing. Apart from occasional video calls, they rarely disturbed each other anymore.
Bai Feng’s home was not far from Hua Feng’s. After experiencing so many extraordinary and unimaginable events, she still didn’t know how to explain it all to her family. Alas, she could only keep it secret for now, hoping it wouldn’t disrupt her family’s peaceful life, Bai Feng thought quietly.
“Do you two have somewhere to go now? If not, you’re welcome to come to my house!” Hua Feng offered.
“Not this time. I’ll visit your place when I have the chance. I really want to go home and see my elderly parents,” Bai Feng replied, still longing to return home as they arrived at her doorstep.
“Hua Feng, my adoptive parents have moved to Beijing, so I don’t really have anywhere to go now. You might as well take me home to meet your parents,” Yun Meng joked.
Hua Feng gently tapped Yun Meng’s nose. “You’re so mischievous. All right, let’s take Bai Feng home first, then we’ll head to my place together.”
“Okay!” Yun Meng replied happily.
Driving through familiar neighborhoods, Hua Feng switched to manual driving, and at Bai Feng’s street, Bai Feng got out alone and walked toward her house. Hua Feng and Yun Meng waved goodbye before heading to their own home.
To avoid unnecessary trouble, Hua Feng parked the black Mercedes RV at the parking lot in front of his house and walked the rest of the way. Wearing jeans and a brown overcoat, Hua Feng walked slowly arm-in-arm with Yun Meng toward their home.
Familiar old streets and familiar signs. Everything at home seemed unchanged. As they approached the door, Hua Feng noticed a dozen or so concealed Emperor-level soldiers lurking nearby. He felt grateful for the organization’s protection of his family; deploying such powerful guards showed how much the government valued his loved ones.
He pressed the doorbell of their apartment on the 22nd floor.
A familiar, deep voice called out, “Who is it? Coming right now.” Hua Feng immediately recognized his father’s voice.
As the door opened, both sides stood stunned for a moment. The slightly aged man inside was nearly moved to tears, seeing his son suddenly appear with his girlfriend, without any warning.
“Hua Feng, Yun Meng, you’re finally back!” His father hugged Hua Feng tightly, holding his hand and asking after him with concern. His mother, busy preparing dinner in the kitchen, came out at the commotion, and was also taken aback, trembling as she spoke, “It’s good you’re back, it’s good you’re back!”
“Dad, Mom, are you both well? Has anything happened at home lately? Your son hasn’t been able to visit often these past few years because of the tasks assigned by the organization, thank you for your patience!” Hua Feng, overwhelmed by emotion, gently comforted his parents.
“Aunt and Uncle, Hua Feng has always been thinking of you, but he was afraid of bringing unnecessary trouble to the family, which is why he hasn’t been home in over two years. Fortunately, the situation is much clearer now, so we could finally come back,” Yun Meng added, holding Hua Feng’s mother’s hand, feeling a bit overwhelmed by their kindness.
“It’s all right, it’s all right! As long as you’re serving the country, our Hua family must be ready to sacrifice for the greater good. But tell me, Hua Feng, Yun Meng, you two have been together for so long—when are you planning to get married?” Hua Feng’s father asked, his gaze sharp and direct.
“Um… Aunt, Uncle, I have no objections, it’s really up to Hua Feng,” Yun Meng replied shyly, her cheeks coloring.
“Dad, Mom, why do you start urging us to marry the moment we walk through the door? We’re so busy these days, there’s hardly any time for a wedding!” Hua Feng hadn’t expected his parents to be so frank, launching straight into the topic.
“You child! What are you saying? Your Uncle Zhang’s child next door is your age. Before we moved into the city, you two used to play together. Now their kid can even run errands!” Hua Feng’s mother began to hint.
“That’s right! You’re twenty-five this year! If you get married now and have a child, your mother and I can help look after them. When we’re old, we won’t have the energy. Watching other families push strollers around the neighborhood, we feel so envious, you know?” His father didn’t hold back, intensifying his plea.
“Um… All right, Dad, Mom, don’t worry. Once things settle down, we’ll hold the wedding,” Hua Feng said, thinking marriage wasn’t such a big deal—it would happen sooner or later. As long as his parents were happy, he was content.
