Volume 1, Chapter 4: The Car Accident
Watching the two women walk away, Duan Wuhen stroked his chin thoughtfully. Closing his eyes tightly, he counted his fingers silently and soon wore an expression of clear understanding. After tidying up the scattered remnants on the table, Duan Wuhen closed the door behind him and headed to Hancheng First People's Hospital.
At that moment, outside the emergency room of Hancheng First People's Hospital, Yan Mingjun paced anxiously. Inside the emergency room lay Yan Xiyue’s mother—Shangguan Xiyue.
Earlier, while drinking tea in his office, Yan Mingjun had suddenly received a call from the hospital. He hurried over without a moment’s delay, only to be stopped by medical staff at the emergency room entrance.
“How is the patient now? Please, I beg you, save my wife,” he pleaded.
“Sir, please don’t be like this. We are doing everything in our power to save her. We kindly ask you to wait outside,” a nurse responded.
Hearing this, Yan Mingjun clasped his head with both hands and crouched in the corner like a helpless child.
“Daddy, how is Mom now?” Yan Xiyue came running over, pulling Zhao Linger along.
Yan Mingjun shook his head, and Yan Xiyue immediately panicked.
“How could this happen? Mom was fine this morning. I must still be half asleep. Linger, pinch me.”
“Calm down, Xiyue. Don’t cry. I believe that Auntie’s fate is protected by heaven,” Zhao Linger comforted her.
At that moment, the lights of the emergency room dimmed, and a doctor opened the door.
“Who is the patient’s family?”
“I-I am. Doctor, how is my wife?” Yan Mingjun quickly stood up.
The doctor shook his head. “Sigh. The patient’s condition is not optimistic. We have stopped the bleeding, but it seems the patient’s brain has suffered trauma and remains unresponsive. Please prepare yourselves mentally.”
“What!” Even Yan Mingjun, not the sharpest, grasped the implication immediately.
Xiyue might very well become a vegetable. What could they do?
Yan Mingjun’s gaze shifted to Yan Xiyue. Suddenly, a gleam flashed in his eyes, and he grabbed Yan Xiyue’s hand firmly.
“Xiyue, where is Wuhen?”
“Daddy, why are you looking for him now? The priority is to find a way to wake Mom.”
“No, no, no, Xiyue, you don’t understand. Only he can save your mother now.”
“What? That bumpkin? He doesn’t look like someone skilled in medicine at all!”
Yan Xiyue was filled with doubt. Besides, she wasn’t very close to that man, so how could she dare ask him for help?
Seemingly sensing his daughter’s hesitation, Yan Mingjun pulled Yan Xiyue aside and spoke quietly.
“Don’t be so shy. Even if you two aren’t close now, at least in name, you are his wife.”
While Yan Xiyue wavered, a voice suddenly came from outside the door.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk, it seems your medical skills aren’t as great as you think.”
Hearing this, every doctor inside the emergency room bristled with anger.
The lead chief scolded, “Kid, which department are you from? Who allowed you to leave your post during work hours?”
“Sorry, young master here isn’t from your hospital. I just can’t bear to watch an innocent life be ruined by your hands.”
“Hahaha, kid, you probably haven’t even graduated college yet.”
“I never went to college.”
“Pfft! Listen to this, he didn’t even attend college and dares to question us.”
Yan Xiyue stepped forward and tugged Duan Wuhen’s sleeve, shaking her head.
“Honey, don’t you trust me?”
Yan Xiyue fell silent.
Duan Wuhen laughed heartily, then turned to face the doctors.
“Let me ask you, when the patient was brought in, was there a bruise on her head?”
The group was taken aback. Indeed, when the patient arrived, there was a bruise on her forehead, but they had dismissed it as a minor bump and focused solely on stopping the bleeding. Moreover, this kid hadn’t even seen the patient before—how could he know her condition?
“See? Am I right? You ignored that bruise, which is the real reason the patient won’t wake up.”
“Get out of the way!” Duan Wuhen pushed aside the stunned chief and moved toward Yan’s mother.
Yan Xiyue and her mother were like two peas in a pod. Though the years had added some wrinkles to her mother’s forehead, it only enhanced her elegance and charm.
Duan Wuhen produced a packet of silver needles seemingly from nowhere, spun one between his fingers, and began inserting them into her forehead.
“Stop! What are you doing?” the chief doctor blocked him.
“Are you blind? Can’t you see I’m performing acupuncture?”
“You little punk, you had me fooled earlier, but now I see through you. How could someone so young know acupuncture?”
“Oh, just because you can’t doesn’t mean others can’t. Step aside and don’t disturb my treatment.”
“Fine, fine. I’ll just watch what you’re up to. If you can’t cure the patient, I’ll call the police.”
“Oh? And if I can?”
“Then I’ll resign as director. Everyone here can witness that.”
“Alright. Honey, watch your husband work his magic.”
Yan Xiyue’s cheeks flushed slightly, and inwardly she grumbled: This guy, I never agreed to be his wife. Then concern crept back over her face. Seeing Daddy place such trust in him, she wondered if he could really wake her mother.
Duan Wuhen’s eyes shone with determination as he twirled the silver needles between his fingers and plunged them into Yan’s mother’s forehead.
When he finished, Yan’s mother still showed no sign of waking.
The chief doctor laughed mockingly. “Kid, if you’re so skilled, why isn’t the patient awake yet?”
“No rush. Let the needles ‘fly’ a little longer.”
Duan Wuhen flicked the ends of the needles. The silver needles on her forehead vibrated, seeming to dance like a swimming dragon.
An elderly man outside the door happened to witness this.
“This… could it be the long-lost Swimming Dragon Shadow Needle Technique?”
The old man pushed open the door eagerly and entered.
At that moment, Duan Wuhen had just completed the treatment and withdrawn the needles. He turned back and exchanged a knowing smile with the worried father and daughter.
“All right, Auntie is out of danger now. She’ll wake up soon.”
“That’s wonderful!”
“Hmph! Nonsense. The patient shows no sign of waking. You’re plainly making a mockery of us.”
A few leading doctors sneered scornfully.
“Daring to call the Swimming Dragon Shadow Needle Technique nonsense? I don’t think you belong here any longer.”
“Director, you’re here?”
“Hmph! If I didn’t come, would I have let you make a mess here?”
“Young man, may I ask if the technique you just used was the Swimming Dragon Shadow Needle?”
Duan Wuhen lightly tapped his forehead, then looked puzzled.
“And you are?”
“Ha! In my excitement, I forgot to introduce myself. I am Xie Guanglin, director of Hancheng First People's Hospital. May I ask where you learned your skills, young man?”
Duan Wuhen shook his head. When he left the mountain, the old man had warned him not to reveal his whereabouts.
Xie Guanglin sighed softly, understanding that everyone has their secrets.
