Chapter Thirty: Within Reach
After sleeping soundly until past six, Lin Lei, wearing Long Wentian’s face, donned a black suit, pocketed Long Wentian’s wallet and car keys, and headed toward the underground parking garage. Due to his shapeshifting ability and sensitivity to bright light, he had also picked out a hat and a pair of sunglasses from Long Wentian’s wardrobe.
“Mr. Long.”
“Brother Tian!”
Along the way, various greetings were exchanged, but Lin Lei feigned a bad mood and didn’t respond. The bald man stayed close behind him all the way to the parking garage entrance.
“Brother, you were attacked just yesterday. If you’re going out today, I should accompany you—”
Lin Lei patted the bald man’s shoulder. “Don’t you trust my methods?”
He imitated Long Wentian’s tone as closely as possible.
The bald man paused.
Lowering his voice, Lin Lei added, “I have some inconvenient matters…”
The bald man nodded quickly, understanding. “Got it. Brother, take care out there.”
Without lingering, he turned and left.
Lin Lei narrowed his eyes, watching the man’s retreating back.
“This bald guy is Long Wentian’s confidant and knows him better than most. I can’t keep this up for long…”
“I’ll try to avoid him these days. Once I deal with Lei Siguang, I’ll get rid of this guy too.”
With that thought, he turned and entered the parking garage.
Pressing the button on the car key, a silver sedan flashed its lights in the distance.
The car was a Baodi E-series, starting at least at half a million yuan, but its appearance was understated.
Lin Lei drove to a small alley near his residential complex, a place without surveillance cameras, parked the car, then changed into his own black hoodie before stepping out.
He bought breakfast downstairs and returned home.
“Guoguo!”
Hearing the door open, the little girl in pajamas came running out first.
Lin Lei ruffled her hair. “You’ve been up for a while?”
She shook her head. “Just got up.”
After breakfast, Lin Lei said again, “Guoguo, I have to go out today. You’re home alone, don’t open the door for anyone, understand?”
The little girl nodded firmly.
Since Qi Fangyan had to go to work during the day, Lin Lei had no choice but to leave the little one alone at home.
“If anything happens, call me immediately.”
…
An hour later.
Lin Lei, transformed back into Long Wentian, stepped out of the Baodi sedan.
He glanced at the bank that had just opened, licking his lips slightly.
“Second Branch of Biyang City Bank.”
It was a relatively remote location from Tianmeige City.
Long Wentian was indeed a cautious man.
He entered the bank quickly.
“Hello, how may I assist you?” a young lady promptly approached.
Clearing his throat, Lin Lei said, “I rented a safety deposit box here a few days ago. Due to special circumstances, I want to retrieve my items early…”
The young lady smiled. “Okay, please take a number…”
Fortunately, there weren’t many people handling safety deposit box business, so Lin Lei didn’t have to wait long.
“Are you here to retrieve your items? Did you bring your magnetic card?” the staff member asked with a polite smile.
Lin Lei pulled out the bank card he had prepared.
The staff member hesitated. “Not the bank card, your black magnetic card issued when you stored your items…”
Lin Lei checked his wallet and shook his head decisively. “I lost it!”
The staff member’s expression was a little strange, but the smile remained polite. “Do you have your ID card and the phone you used for the transaction?”
Lin Lei breathed a sigh of relief.
Since he was dealing with his own institution, losing the magnetic card wouldn’t prevent him from getting his belongings.
After going through the loss report and reissue process, the staff member led Lin Lei into a silver vault heavily guarded by security.
Passing through two electronic doors, they entered a spacious room filled with silver metal boxes.
Each box was secured with a combination lock.
The staff member stopped at the entrance, gesturing politely. “Your box number is D217. The code was set by you; there are three unlocking methods: numeric password, fingerprint, and iris recognition…”
Lin Lei’s mouth twitched slightly. With a strange expression, he walked toward the D217 metal box.
Looking at the combination lock keypad and fingerprint and iris scanners, he suddenly froze.
Although he had taken on Long Wentian’s appearance, even those closest to Long Wentian would find it hard to tell him apart physically, but ultimately, he was not the man himself.
His fingerprints and iris patterns wouldn’t match.
In other words, only the numeric password could open the box.
But the problem was, that password was set by Long Wentian and the bank could neither modify nor reset it…
Lin Lei raised an eyebrow.
He tried “000000” and “123456,” but all were incorrect.
“Not so simple after all… If only I had kept Long Wentian alive a little longer…”
In truth, this was a bit of hindsight. He only discovered Long Wentian might have an extraordinary item after eliminating him.
Lin Lei’s mind raced, devising strategies. Suddenly, his eyes brightened.
He turned back.
His gaze swept around carefully, memorizing the approximate location of his safety deposit box and the room’s layout.
At that moment, the bank staff returned, surprised to see Lin Lei empty-handed.
“Mr. Long, are you not retrieving your items?”
Lin Lei smiled. “Correct. Please escort me out.”
The staff member’s expression grew even stranger but said nothing.
“Follow me, please.”
He nodded and walked ahead toward the exit.
Lin Lei’s gaze flickered as he continuously scanned his surroundings.
Soon after leaving the bank and getting into the car, Lin Lei immediately took out his phone and downloaded a layout app.
Based on memory, he sketched everything he had just passed, including the specific distances and perspective of each corridor leading to his safety deposit box.
This required an incredibly strong spatial imagination and memory, as well as a keen and precise sense of distance.
Before his second breakthrough, inheriting the original body’s high IQ brain, Lin Lei would have struggled with this, but now, not only had his body and strength improved greatly, his mental capacity was far superior.
After roughly completing the drawing, Lin Lei exhaled deeply, then looked out the car window.
Comparing the sketch in his hand with the bank’s heavy, towering walls, he narrowed his eyes.
…
Half an hour later.
Lin Lei drove back to the side wall of the bank.
In the passenger seat sat a small companion: thirteen-year-old Guoguo.
“This is it, right ahead, about six meters from you, height is… the box’s dimensions are length, width, and height…”
Lin Lei looked at the little girl. “How’s this distance? Can you accurately retrieve the items inside?”
Guoguo nodded firmly, a confident gleam on her face. “No problem!”
She closed her eyes and spread her hands.
Then, in the next instant—
With a soft whoosh!
Lin Lei watched in astonishment as a small, silver briefcase suddenly appeared in Guoguo’s hands.
