Chapter 3: They Can’t Do It, But I Can

She was a prodigious transfer student.
She was very beautiful.
Her name was Ning Li.
She and he had been in the same class for a month, with no interaction except for that one time.
He caught her in an embarrassing moment, and she fled in panic.
During her escape, she still accepted a piece of bread he offered.
Xiao Chi Mu disliked owing favors, so the next day she bought fresh bread to repay him, but he didn’t come that day, nor the next, and eventually never returned. Finally, the teacher said he had dropped out.
So that piece of bread remained an unpaid debt to this day.
Chi Mu thought to herself, “If fate allows, I’ll repay it someday.”
The rain outside intensified, and Chi Mu hailed a private car, arriving at the bus stop outside the hospital to wait.
The weather was gloomy and cold.
She wrapped her coat tightly, leaning against a trash bin at the stop.
Here, the wind was lighter.
Fu Ning Li emerged from visiting a patient, blocked at the hospital entrance.
He leaned against the back seat of a car, watching through the rain-streaked window at the woman leaning against the trash bin at the bus stop.
She was dressed all in black, wearing a mask, revealing only a pair of fox-like eyes.
Those eyes were clear and pure.
He felt he had seen them somewhere before.
Out of her sight, he unabashedly studied her.
For some reason, a girl suddenly flashed through Fu Ning Li’s mind.
That girl had been crouching by a trash can in a narrow alley outside school, picking through discarded half-packaged chips to eat.
Back then, he knew she was a wealthy heiress with luxury cars picking her up and dropping her off every day; eating garbage must be some peculiar habit.
He never imagined that as she grew up, she still liked scavenging.
Out of old classmate sentiment, Fu Ning Li told Song Yuan to stop the car by the platform.
Chi Mu saw the car stop just in time. Her phone notified her the private car had arrived, so she opened the door and got in, only to freeze when she saw someone in the back seat. “I didn’t book a ride-share.”
Taking a closer look and recognizing Ning Li, she was even more perplexed. “What are you doing here?”
Fu Ning Li explained, “This is my car.”
“You hired someone to drive a private car?”
Fu Ning Li was speechless.
Fu Ning Li asked, “Where are you headed?”
“The destination is on the order.”
“Tell me.”
“Hengyu Bay.”
Just as Chi Mu finished speaking, the private driver called, asking where she was. Only then did she realize she had gotten into the wrong car.
Fu Ning Li had Song Yuan drive toward Hengyu Bay. Then, looking at the embarrassed Chi Mu wrapped awkwardly in silence, he said, “You’re right, we must have met before. If I’m not mistaken, your name is Chi Mu?”

Sure enough, a genius remains a genius even grown up; he could still recognize her despite everything.
Chi Mu felt gratified. “Yes, I’m Chi Mu, Ning Li.”
After the gratitude came a tinge of regret.
She hadn’t expected fate to come so quickly, but unfortunately, she didn’t have any bread with her now.
Chi Mu quickly examined Ning Li and, though they weren’t close, dared to ask, “How did you injure your leg?”
In her memory, Ning Li wasn’t limping.
Perhaps she could heal her?
That would count as repaying the bread favor.
Fu Ning Li didn’t answer but countered, “How did you get that scar on your face?”
The scar near her ear was exposed beyond her mask.
Chi Mu narrowed her eyes and answered frankly, “It was a burn.”
Fu Ning Li fell silent, then slowly said, “Mine was beaten with a stick.”
At that moment, the car abruptly curved.
Song Yuan, gripping the steering wheel, tensed suddenly, his face betraying shock.
Over the years, no one but the Fu family dared mention Master Fu’s leg injury; he never spoke of it to outsiders, especially how he became crippled.
The sudden jolt caused Chi Mu to lunge toward Fu Ning Li, her hands barely pressing on his legs.
She took the chance to squeeze and feel the muscles and nerves in his leg.
Fu Ning Li, irritated by her touch, finally showed some displeasure on his impassive face, snatching her hand away and questioning, “What are you doing?”
Chi Mu’s gaze never left his leg. “I’m checking it. Maybe I can fix your leg.”
“No one can!”
Fu Ning Li shrugged off Chi Mu, still angry.
Over the years, he had sought out renowned experts at home and abroad; not a single one could get him back on his feet!
He even tried ancient folk remedies!
All useless!
No one could help!
Chi Mu looked at the painful spot she had struck, trying to persuade him, “They couldn’t, but I can. Ning Li, please trust me just this once? There’s nothing worse than this. Why not try a desperate measure?”
“Nothing worse than this?”
“Yes, nothing.”
“No, there is.”
“What?”
“Total paralysis.”
“……”
Fu Ning Li gave a slight, derisive laugh.
He didn’t believe her at all.
Suddenly, silence engulfed the car, the atmosphere dropping to freezing point.

Chi Mu felt blocked and frustrated inside after being rejected.
But soon, she tried to see things from Ning Li’s perspective—if she were Ning Li, she wouldn’t believe a junior high school acquaintance she barely knew could heal her burn either.
Thinking that way, her mood lightened considerably.
Chi Mu borrowed paper and pen from Fu Ning Li and wrote down a string of phone numbers.
“Ning Li, you gave me a piece of bread, so I owe you a favor. If you ever need anything, you can come to me anytime. This is my contact.”
Just then, Song Yuan stopped the car. Speaking to the rear seat, he said, “Miss Chi, we’ve arrived at Hengyu Bay.”
Chi Mu shoved the paper into Ning Li’s hand and opened the door to get out.
She stood in the rain holding an umbrella, watching the car drive away.
…
Inside the car, Fu Ning Li leaned back with his eyes closed, resting.
The weariness between his brows looked like he had just endured a long, exhausting battle.
He clenched the paper tightly for a long moment before loosening his grip.
Then he tucked it into a nearby financial magazine.
He remembered the bread she gave him.
But he didn’t want her to repay that favor.
…
Hengyu Bay was a famous wealthy district in Haishi.
Only private cars entered and left the area.
Chi Mu walked a long way before reaching home, where only Zhang Ma came out to greet her.
“Miss, you’re soaked. Come inside quickly. Sir and madam are having dinner.”
Chi Mu took off her coat as she passed through the main hall.
There, three rows of evening gowns were displayed—all the latest season’s collections from major luxury brands.
Zhang Ma said, “Miss Zhen’er spent the whole afternoon trying on dresses but wasn’t satisfied with any. If you were here to choose, any dress you wore would stun the entire room!”
At this, Chi Mu smiled genuinely, a rare moment.
She entered the dining room. Yun Sufen, seeing her, was surprised but then suddenly realized, “Oh, I completely forgot you were discharged today. Come quickly, let’s have dinner together!”
Chi Zhen’er sat there, looking innocent and harmless. “It’s all my fault for making mom stay to help me pick dresses and forgetting that my sister was discharged. I hope she’s not mad at me?”
Chi Li Feng shot a glance at Chi Mu. “Why would she be mad? Since she’s back, just sit down and eat.”
Zhang Ma pulled out the chair next to Chi Zhen’er.
Chi Mu sat down and took off her mask.
Instantly, she heard gasps from the people beside her.
Especially Chi Zhen’er, who covered her chest and made a retching face.
Chi Mu turned her face toward her. “What’s wrong?”
Chi Zhen’er, seeing Chi Mu’s scarred face, felt even more nauseated and had no appetite. “Sister, I… I’m just squeamish and scared.”
