Bathed in the gentle light of morning, Onni wove her fine, smooth hair into a traditional Nordic flower braid, wrapping a loose linen skirt around her waist. It felt a bit tight, so she loosened it, thinking she resembled a strangled rice dumpling. With a fingertip, she dabbed some sea salt and bared her teeth like a baboon to clean them, then wrapped her entire head in a scarf, leaving only a pair of brilliant eyes, blue as aquamarine, exposed.

In these troubled times, possessing an outstanding appearance could easily invite disaster. She preferred to wrap herself up tightly, keeping any sign of wealth well hidden and taking pleasure in her own solitude.

Her leather boots rose high enough to cover her calves. Stepping out of her home, she made her way early to the harbor where the ships lay anchored.
