5 Side Story
After the late emperor’s passing, Zheng He remained in the capital city, never once leaving. This was the most prosperous place in the realm, with layered eaves and ornate brackets, blooming flowers in splendid array—nothing like the harsh climate of the sea. Every morning, Zheng He could hear the crisp chirping of sparrows perched on the branches, and his days passed with unparalleled leisure. Yet, what he missed most was the sound of the waves, and their enchanting song.
Perhaps she had been waiting for him all along.
But he had broken his promise; in this lifetime, they would never meet again.
On his deathbed, Zheng He dreamed.
He dreamed that he had become an albatross, spreading his wings as he soared away from the capital. Towering city walls flashed past behind him, and before him stretched a vast expanse of deep blue. Flapping his broad wings, he flew over the boundless ocean, heading westward.
At last, from afar came a melody—a mermaid sitting upon a reef, singing. He circled around her, then gently landed before her.
